Our origins

And why Linverd wasn’t born in an office, but in a farmhouse near Montserrat

For three years, Joan was my only neighbor.

At first, I thought he didn’t like me.
I had just moved into a farmhouse, full of excitement, carrying my life’s project with me: I’d been writing about starting an organic supermarket for years. I already had a community on social media, I was selling fruit and veggie boxes online… everything was starting to take shape.

Joan had been growing chemical-free produce for over 30 years, and he lived literally 30 seconds away from me. I thought: this is the perfect match.
I told him all about my idea, that it was fate, that we were meant to work together, side by side…

But Joan didn’t want to sell to me.

He didn’t even give many reasons. He just said:
—“Esteve, I can’t sell to you. I have other commitments.”

And I, frustrated:
—“But I’m your ONLY neighbor, Joan!”

I had no choice but to figure it out.
I had to drive for miles to find other farmers. And Joan… would only sell me leftovers.

It was hard to accept. I had something so valuable right next to me… and I couldn’t share it with my customers.

But Joan wasn’t just any farmer.
He was a man of faith. A man who puts soul into every tomato, and who doesn’t give his produce to just anyone.

He needed to know if I was the right person.

Months passed. Then years.
And Joan saw that I was serious.
That this wasn’t a trend.
That there was coherence, consistency, and purpose.

Little by little, he began to sell me more.
And the beautiful part? Now that I no longer live there, he sells me more than ever.

He even came to Linverd to play harmonica for our customers.
Yes, Joan. The same one who wouldn’t sell me a single pumpkin.

What did I learn from this?

That to earn something truly valuable, you need time.
That patience isn’t just a virtue — it’s a filter.

If I had rushed it, pressured him, or walked away…
I wouldn’t have Joan and his family as part of Linverd today.
And I wouldn’t be able to offer our customers some of the most honest food I’ve ever seen.
