Little Leprechaun Lettuce Seeds: Growing organic lettuce is relatively simple if you control soil drainage, temperature and humidity, as it is a crop sensitive to extremes and can sprout early if it suffers stress.
It works well in many types of soil, but it is essential that it drains well and maintains an approximate pH between 5.5 and 7, to facilitate good development from the beginning.
The ideal climate is between 20 and 30 °C, avoiding extreme temperatures because they can cause early sprouting and loss of leaf quality.
For fertilization, incorporate compost as a base fertilizer to cover the needs of the crop, and ensure that phosphorus is available at the beginning; if after incorporating the compost the soil does not provide enough, it is recommended to add a mineral fertilizer rich in this nutrient.
The sowing can be done in seedlings and transplanted after 3 or 4 weeks; Row cultivation is usually done with 15–20 cm between plants and 45–60 cm between lines.
Watering must be frequent because the root is shallow; drip irrigation is interesting because it avoids excess moisture on the leaves and reduces the risk of diseases.
For weed control, mulching is a very useful option to reduce competition with spontaneous flora.
In terms of pests, mites, aphids, leafminers and gall nematodes may appear; biological control is proposed with auxiliaries, hedges around the crop and, if necessary, application of potassium soap or azadirachtin (neem oil), and in the case of mites also powdered sulfur if T < 28 °C.
In terms of diseases, alternaria, sclerotinia, mildew and gray rot are mentioned; Wide frames, rotations, rapid removal of affected plants and, if necessary, cupric fungicides such as Bordeaux mixture, low-concentration copper hydroxide and regular application of bentonite are recommended, always avoiding excess water and humidity on the plant.
Post-harvest: to maximize conservation, 0 °C and a relative humidity greater than 95% are needed.
